Pronunciation: (ad-en-off-or-a)
Family: Ladybells, Grand Bellflower, CAMPANULACEAE

No surprise to find these striking perennials included in the Campanula family — they look alike and are closely related, the difference being the presence of a nectar gland at the base of the style.

Illustrated Adenophora lilifolia blooms late summer, sending up stems of mauve-blue bell-flowers 45cm/18in and more in height. They prefer a cool climate, full sun and a light but rich soil.

Propagation by division is difficult, for they resent disturbance of the roots. Try ripe seed, sown in spring. It’s slower but more reliable. Pleasantly fragrant.
